Election 2012: Who will you choose? 

The upcoming presidential election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney will prove to be a challenge for Middlesex. Romney’s background is close to home, literally, as he lives a mere twenty-five minutes away from campus. He also earned his MBA at Harvard and co-founded the Boston-headquartered financial services company, Bain Capital. 

Romney’s ideals fluctuate with what the public, or in his case, the conservatives, want. Romney by himself can be considered a moderate Republican. At the beginning of his time in office as Massachusetts governor, Romney held a pro-choice position, but by the end, his opinion had changed to pro-life, in an effort to support his Republican party. Romney was also instrumental in granting health care to all Massachusetts residents and therefore gained the support of many Democrats. Romney has generally been against same-sex marriage but advocates tolerance and domestic partnership benefits. In his 2008 and current presidential campaign, Romney seemed to be more aligned with traditional conservatives. Romney’s constant changes in stance and position have contributed to the public’s perception of his lack of authenticity. Many even believe that he holds no core values. Romney is first and foremost a businessman, but Obama started his career with the intention of being in politics. 

Obama graduated Columbia and Harvard Law, where he was president of the Harvard Law Review. Both universities are known for their prestige and also boast many members of the Middlesex community as alumni. As president, Obama signed off on the stimulus bill, which aided increasing unemployment and bailed out American car companies like General Motors and Chrysler. However, many argue that the stimulus plan has had no impact on unemployment. Obama supports same-sex marriage, and anded the “Don’t Ask, don’t tell” policy which had prevented gay and lesbian people from serving openly in the Armed Forces. Obama also pulled out all combat troops from Iraq, and focused on counter-terrorism as well as the training, equipping, and advising of Iraqi security forces. 

Personally, I’ve always been liberal, so my choice for the upcoming election is easy. I can surmise that Middlesex will vote Romney because of his affiliation with Massachusetts and conservative economic policies. At Middlesex, we’re often closed off in what is known as “the bubble.” More than anything, it is important to keep informed on current events and politics. Don’t just base your decision on where someone’s from, if they’re Democratic or Republican, or what your friends think. Read each candidate’s policies. Watch the debates. Become an active member of society so one it’s your time to vote, you can cast your vote with confidence.

Swam across and back our lake today! My friend and I did a combo of mini IMs and kicking on our back. It was much more tiring then I thought it would be.
